Lunar Halo on April 5, 2017

I decided to give the sky one  last look before packing it in for the night, I really wanted to get the scope out last night for some lunar photography. I’m still trying to learn how to use the ASI290MC camera. The clouds were rapidly moving in from the southwest from an approaching warm front, but I did manage to catch this lunar halo before packing it in.

Tech Specs: Canon 6D, Samyang 14mm f/2.8, tripod mounted. Single exposure at ISO 1600 for 5 seconds. Imaged from Weatherly, Pennsylvania on April 5, 2017.

Lots of Lightning – No Perseid Meteors

Well, I had no cooperating weather for the peak night of the Perseid Meteor Shower, but did manage a few lightning strike photos. Here is one captured on August 11, 2016 looking west. The bright light on the left was from the moon trying to break through the clouds.

Mammatus Clouds Over Monroe County Pennsylvania

I have only had the opportunity to photograph Mammatus clouds in Pennsylvania on two occasions, one of them was yesterday afternoon (March 17, 2016). Unfortunately, the only camera I had available at the time was my trusty Apple iPhone 5S. I managed to capture the huge formation using the panorama mode of the camera.

Tech Specs: Apple iPhone 5S, ISO 32, 1/2160 second, f/2.2, 4mm, panorama mode.

The Science: From what I have learned, the formation of these clouds is still not fully understood, there are several theories surrounding the formation. From Wikipedia – Mammatus, also known as mammatocumulus (meaning “mammary cloud”),is a meteorological term applied to a cellular pattern of pouches hanging underneath the base of a cloud. The name mammatus is derived from the Latin mamma (meaning “udder” or “breast”).

Clear skies!

Lightning in Eastern Pennsylvania

Thought I would share this capture of some cloud to cloud lightning from last evening in Eastern Pennsylvania. It was a fantastic display, only managed to capture three good streaks though.

This was using a Canon 6D, Samyang 14mm lens, f/22, 20 second exposure.

Lightning captured on July 18, 2015.
