Eclipse Preparations

So, the glass screw-on solar filter I ordered from Thousand Oaks Optical doesn’t appear as though it will arrive in time for the eclipse. I fashioned this filter using Styrofoam, 4″x4″ solar filter sheet and hot glue. This will be placed on the business end of my lens which will be my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM + Canon 2x Extender III giving me a 400mm f/5.6 lens. We plan on observing from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon (if the travel gods smile upon us and the weather gods are not angered).

This arrangement will allow me to quickly remove the filter and switch to a wider angle for totality.

    Hi Tom,

I was waiting for a solar filter to become available for my 75-300 mm lens and it just hasn’t. Last month I went on e-Bay and found Spectrum Telescopes. Their address is http://stores.ebay.com/spectrumtelescopes/. I was able to get a filter and adapter, since it is a 62 mm filter and my lens is 58 mm, for $60.49 and it was delivered in 3 days. They aren’t showing anything for sale right now, but you might write them and ask them if you are interested.

You are most welcome. I meant to say originally that I have been waiting for Canon to say they had the one they have had on their website since at least February, since that was when I started looking, back in stock. But, it has yet to be listed as such.

Had no idea Canon was planning to release one!

I don’t know that they ever acutally did. I can’t find it at all now. But, starting around January or February, either Astronomy or Sky and Telescope, maybe both, were running ads for Canon advertising their “Solar Eclipse package deals”. One of them was the 75 to 300 mm EM with a solar filter, I can’t remember the brand, started wth an H, and a filter holder or adapter. From there, you could look up the solar filter and adapter alone. But, they were out of stock every time I checked. But, I haven’t seen their eclipse packages since August came in. So, it may be that they just arranged a deal with someone who never delivered the filters.
