A Crescent Moon and Mercury in the West

Last night offered a nice view of the conjunction of the young crescent moon and the planet Mercury in the western skies of the Northern Latitudes.  Mars was also visible, although higher above the moon. You can see some stars of the constellation Cetus just to the right of the moon. The ½ second exposure was just enough to bring out the Earthshine on the moon.

Tech Specs: Canon 6D, Canon EF70-200mm f/2.8L USM lens, tripod mounted. ½ second exposure at ISO 640, f/2.8, 140mm. Imaging was done on March 29, 2017 from Weatherly, Pennsylvania.

Here is an updated version after I had the time to make some adjustments.

Saturn, Mars and Antares – August 22, 2016

Here is an image I captured last night showing (from top to bottom) Saturn, Mars and Antares. Do you see the fuzzy ball to the lower right of Antares? That is a globular cluster known as the Cat’s Eye or Messier 4.

Venus and Jupiter Close Conjunction on August 27, 2016

How is this for a close planetary conjunction? Check out the view after sunset on August 27, 2016 (from Northern Latitudes) and see Venus and Jupiter get within five arc minutes of each other. Probably too low on the horizon to get my telescope on it, but I’ll be making the attempt using a 400mm lens and x2 extender. I hope to see your photos online!
